Exercise 1: The Microscope and Scientific Method
This exercise is an introduction to compound and dissecting microscopes and to scientific method. Students learn how to use and care for both kinds of microscopes. Exercises include making a wet mount, estimating the size of microscopic objects, and appreciating depth of field. In the introduction to scientific method exercise, students design and conduct an investigation of phototaxis by the flatworm, Dugesia.

Exercise 2: Cells and Tissues
This exercise is an introduction to animal cell and tissue structure and function. The exercise includes activities that help students appreciate the diversity of animal cell types from the perspective of the compound light microscope and details of cell structure from the perspective of the electron microscope. A survey of the four animal tissue types is also included.

Exercise 3: Aspects of Cell Function
This exercise includes activities that demonstrate passive and active transport mechanisms, aerobic cellular respiration, and mitosis. The cellular respiration exercise is structured as an open-ended investigation in which students use skills learned in the scientific method portion of exercise 1. Students formulate their own hypotheses, design a test of their hypotheses, and analyze and present their data.
