  1. The plasma membrane would probably dissolve in the water surrounding and within the cell, thus allowing the cellular contents to escape and the cell to disintegrate.
  2. Light microscopes are much less expensive and simpler to use than electron microscopes, and the high resolution of the electron microscope is usually unnecessary. Beginning students do not routinely use EMs because of the cost, the space they require, the complexity of specimen preparation, and the training required to learn to prepare specimens and use the EM.
  3. The polio virus has a diameter of 30 nm and the channels in the plasma membrane are only 0.8 nm wide (table 2.2).
