Anyone interested in understanding and managing modern organizations cannot overlook the phenomenon called Wal-Mart. As indicated in the opening vignette for this chapter, Wal-Mart is a true giant in every respect. Not surprisingly, Wal-Mart is a lightening rod for controversy these days. Its big-box store locations, impact on small retailers, pay and promotion practices, and foreign sourcing all have aroused criticism. Here is a chance to hear Wal-Mart’s side of the story, to better render a fair judgment about the company. At Wal-Mart’s Internet homepage (www.walmart.com), scroll to the very bottom and click on “Company Information.” Browse the headings such as “About Wal-Mart” (be sure to read “The Wal-Mart Culture”) and the topics under “Good, Works.”
