Assimilation  The absorption of ethnic minority groups into the dominant group
Commitment  The part of identity development in which adolescents show a personal investment in what they are going to do
Connectedness  The part of identity consisting of mutuality and permeability
Crisis  Period of identity development during which adolescents choose among meaningful alternatives
Cross-cultural studies  The comparison of a culture with one or more other cultures
Dating scripts  Cognitive models used to guide and evaluate dating interactions
Ethnic identity  Enduring aspect of the self that includes a sense of membership in an ethnic group
Identity achievement  Term for adolescents who have undergone a crisis and have made a commitment
Identity diffusion  Term for adolescents who have not experienced a crisis or made a commitment
Identity foreclosure  Term for adolescents who have made a commitment but have not experienced a crisis
Identity moratorium  Term for adolescents who are in the midst of a crisis and whose commitments are either absent or vaguely defined
Individuality  The part of identity consisting of self-assertion and separateness
Multiculturalism  The coexistence of distinct ethnic and cultural groups in the same society
Rite of passage  A ceremony or ritual that marks an individual’s transition from one status to another
Young offender  A person between the ages of 13 and 19 who commits a criminal act
