Addiction  A pattern of behaviour characterized by overwhelming involvement with using/securing drugs
Aerobic exercise  Sustained exercise that stimulates heart and lung activity
AIDS  Acquired immune deficiency syndrome that destroys the body’s immune system
Basal metabolism rate (BMR)  The minimum amount of energy a person uses in a resting state
Chlamydia  The most common STD, caused by an organism that spreads by sexual contact and infects both sexes
Date or acquaintance rape  Coercive sexual activity directed at someone with whom the perpetrator is acquainted
Disease model of addiction  The view that addictions are biologically based, lifelong diseases that require treatment for recovery
Genital herpes  A sexually transmitted disease caused by different strains of viruses
Gonorrhea  One of the most common STDs; caused by the bacterium Gonococcus
HPV  A virus that causes warts, including on the genitals
Life-process model of addiction  The view that addiction is not a disease but a habitual response and source of gratification and security
Personality type theory  John Holland’s system that matches personality with a particular career
Post-formal thought  Understanding that the correct answer to a problem requires reflective thinking
Restrained eaters  Individuals who chronically restrict their food intake to control their weight
Sexual assault  Forcible sexual intercourse with someone who has not given consent
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and diseases (STDs)  Diseases that are contracted primarily through sexual contact
Syphilis  A sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum
