Affectionate love  The type of love where a person desires to have the other person near and has a deep affection for the other
Becoming parents and a family with children  The third stage in the family life cycle, where adults move up a generation and become caregivers to the younger generation
Consensual validation  We are attracted to people similar to ourselves; our attitudes/behaviour are validated
Family at mid-life  The fifth stage in the family life cycle, where launching children, linking generations, and adapting to mid-life changes occur
Family in later life  The sixth/final stage in family life cycle; involves retirement and often grandparenting
Family with adolescents  The fourth stage in family life cycle; adolescent children push for autonomy
Friendship  A form of close relationship that involves enjoyment, trust, mutual assistance, and confiding
Individuated-connected level  The highest level of relationship maturity in White’s model, where one is acquiring an understanding of oneself as well as consideration for others’ motivations and anticipation of their needs
Launching  The process in which youths move into adulthood and exit their family of origin
Leaving home and becoming a single adult  The first stage in the family life cycle, which involves launching
New couple  The second stage in the family life cycle, where two individuals from separate families unite
Role-focused level  The second level in White's model of relationship maturity; others seen in their own right
Romantic love  "Passionate love"; has strong sexual and infatuation components
Self-focused level  The first level of relationship maturity in White’s model, when one’s perspective of a relationship is concerned only with how it affects oneself
Triangular theory of love  Sternberg’s theory that love has the three components of passion, intimacy, and commitment
