Baby boomer  A person born between 1945 and 1960
Chronic disorders  Disorders characterized by slow onset and long duration
Climacteric  Term used to describe the mid-life transition in which fertility declines
Crystallized intelligence  Accumulated information and verbal skills; Horn says it increases with age
Expertise  Having an extensive, highly organized knowledge and understanding of a particular domain
Fluid intelligence  Ability to reason abstractly; Horn says it steadily declines from middle adulthood
Globalization  An international economic initiative aimed at increased economic integration with respect to trade and investment
Hardiness  Personality style characterized by a sense of commitment, control, and seeing problems as challenges
Leisure  Pleasant times after work when individuals are free to pursue activities and interests of their choosing
Menopause  Complete cessation of a woman's menstruation; usually occurs in late 40s or early 50s
Middle adulthood  The developmental period beginning about 40 years of age and extending to about 60
Sleep apnea  A temporary cessation of breathing when the airways become blocked
Type A behaviour pattern  Characteristics thought to be related to the incidence of heart disease
Type B behaviour pattern  Being primarily calm and easygoing
