A 3-year-old girl is brought to you by her mother after she is noted to have small pink spots on her lower extremities and blood blisters in her mouth. She has had no recent illnesses. You note petechiae on her lower extremities and purpura in her oropharynx. The mother and patient deny hematuria, rectal bleeding, or melena. You obtain a CBC, which is normal except for a platelet count of 15,000/mm3. You suspect idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
