A 52-year-old woman with a history of rheumatoid arthritis is admitted to the hospital for removal of an infected knee joint prosthesis. Cultures from the infected prosthesis grow methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. She is treated as an outpatient with parenteral antibiotics and presents to your office for a follow-up appointment. You obtain a CBC, revealing a WBC 8,000/mm3, hemoglobin 9.5 g/dl, hematocrit 28%, platelet count 450,000/mm3. Serum iron levels are low, serum transferrin receptor is normal, while ferritin is increased.
