Chapter Introductions. Each chapter begins with a brief general introduction, placing the topic within the context of contemporary theory and research and relating it to conditions in daily life.

Articles. Each chapter includes at least two readings, preceded by a short introduction that highlights its significance in relation to the chapter topic. Adapted from original sources, these readings represent a mixture of current topics and classic issues. They extend the ideas encountered in the main textbook and indicate recent thinking and controversies in a given area.

Research Highlights. Throughout the book, the authors have inserted brief excerpts from works of literature, anecdotes, cartoons, and research and applications highlights that illustrate important principles in thought-provoking ways.

Research Projects. Each chapter also includes several research projects. These projects engage the student in the experiments and allow them to be the researcher.
