Women's Football

Announcer: The Vixens have won the toss and elected to receive.

Narrator: There's excitement in the air.

Announcer: The [unintelligible] have kicked off and we are underway here in St. Paul.

Narrator: There's action on the field.

Announcer: We're going to pitch it out this time to the near side.

Narrator: There's a mascot, banners, announcers, fans, cheerleaders, locker room pep talks...

Announcer: And a big collision. The ball is loose...

Narrator: And the game is hard fought.

Announcer: Shannon Davis we will tell you a little about her in a moment she is...

Narrator: She, She! Yup, its the women's professional football league, and number 77 in red is local woman, Kim Ketchup.

Kim Ketchup: I got more hurt, I got more bruises playing with the boys than the girls you know.

Narrator: Kim learned the ropes in the Vista High School varsity squad. She didn't play much, filed a sex discrimination suit and lost. But now she's a two-way starter for the Minnesota Vixens. Defensive end and offensive tackle, and she is teaching her teammates.

Kim Ketchup: If you have your knuckles white, what they told us if your knuckles is white they know you're going to run. You know 'cause all your weight is forward. So that's probably why they told you do, do on your knuckles.

Narrator: Of course she loves football. That's why she jumped at the opportunity to join the fledgling WPFL.

Kim Ketchup: I didn't know that there was actually that many women out there that wanted to play and so I was like well you knew what the heck you might as well give it a try.

Announcer: A bad snap from center and the ball is bouncing around...

Narrator: If you're having fun like this, who worries about getting paid? It's a good thing because she hasn't seen a nickel yet.

Kim Ketchup: If I get money, then that will be the icing on the cake, but if not, hey, it's OK with me you know.
