Physical Development and Health in Adolescence

Chapter Overview

Chapter 15 sketches the enormous physical changes that occur during adolescence. In this chapter, the authors:
  • Identify markers of adolescence, and point out opportunities and risks of this developmental transition
  • Describe how puberty begins, and identify possible causes and effects of variations in its timing
  • Describe characteristic physical changes in males and females and psychological impacts of these changes
  • Examine health issues and concerns, including the importance of physical fitness and the causes, implications, prevention, and treatment of depression, eating disorders, drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, and abuse and neglect
  • Identify the chief causes of death in adolescence; discuss trends and patterns in suicide among teenagers, and suggest methods of prevention
  • Identify protective factors affecting adolescents' health and well-being.
