Internet Exercises

1) Find out more information about the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and its law enforcement services. Go to www.doi.gov/bia/oles/ . Check out the Bureau's mission statement and functional statement. Read about the history of Indian Law Enforcement. What were the duties of the Indian police? How did the problems with law enforcement vary by Territories? Who was the first Indian female officer? In what capacity did she serve?

2) Using your web browser, find out the application requirements for private security officers. Compare these requirements to local police agencies. What are the similarities and/or differences? What type of training is provided to private security personnel? Are they armed? Do they have arrest powers? A good place to start is www.lawenforcementjobs.com , a site that posts both police and private security jobs.
