Managing Environmental Issues

Chapter Objectives

Growing public interest in protecting the environment has prompted political and corporate leaders to become increasingly responsive to environmental issues. In the United States, policymakers have moved toward greater reliance on market-based mechanisms, rather than command and control regulations, to achieve environmental goals. At the same time, many businesses have become increasingly proactive and have pioneered new approaches to effective environmental management.

This chapter focuses on these key questions and objectives:

1

What are the main features of U.S. environmental laws, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of different regulatory approaches?

2

What are the costs and benefits of environmental regulation?

3

What is an ecologically sustainable organization, and through what stages do firms pass as they become more sustainable?

4

How can businesses best manage environmental issues?

5

Does effective environmental management make firms more competitive?
