Business and Public Policy

Chapter Objectives

Business decision making and political decision making are closely connected. Business decisions affect politics; political decisions affect business. Government actions are an expression of a nation's public policy and shape the business environment in important ways. Some public policy decisions affect entire industries or specific firms. Managers must understand how the public policy process functions in every nation in which their company operates and be prepared to participate in that process in an ethical and legal manner.

This chapter focuses on these key questions and objectives:

1

What are the key elements of the public policy process?

2

What major areas of economic policy affect business in every nation?

3

How do social welfare policies affect business?

4

What are the major forms of government regulation of business?

5

What factors drive the growth of regulation? What drives the growth of deregulation?

6

Why is international regulation emerging? How does it work?
