Online Writing Labs

The following writing labs are good places to start your search for writing information and help on the Internet. Most include links to other sites of interest.

The Writing Center at Colorado State University

http://writing.colostate.edu

An extremely thorough writing site that includes over 70 guides for writers, an annotated list of Internet links, interactive demonstrations and tutorials, and library links and guides. It is possible to submit your paper to the site and receive advice from a writing tutor, although priority is given to Colorado State University students.

Purdue University Online Writing Lab

http://owl.english.purdue.edu

This site offers handouts on general writing concerns, English as a second language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation, research and documenting sources, professional writing, and writing across the curriculum. It also includes PowerPoint presentations and hypertext workshops, as well as advice on using the Internet.

The Writing Resource Center of Bemidji State University

http://cal.bemidji.msus.edu/wrc/wrchome.html

Beyond this site’s casual tone and amusing design, you will find links to writing resources, real-time writing chat rooms, and discussion groups on English and writing. As with the Colorado site, you can submit a draft to this site for advice from a writing tutor.

The Writing Center @ Rensselaer

http://www.rpi.edu/dept/llc/writecenter/web/index.html

This online writing center, based at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, includes handouts on citation styles, cover letter and resume writing, and styles and types of writing. It also offers links to reference sources from dictionaries to the Census Bureau, as well as a good set of links to Internet design resources.

The Online Writery

http://web.missouri.edu/~writery/index2.html

The Online Writery, based at the University of Missouri—Columbia, includes the Writery Café, a discussion group for writers and access to ZooMOO, an education and writing focused MOO. It also includes links on citation style and creative writing.

Virginia Tech Online Writing Lab

http://www.english.vt.edu/~owl/owl.html

This online writing lab offers two interactive features to the general public: GRAM Owl, an online grammar hotline that provides responses to brief writing questions submitted via email, and "The KnoW it Owl," a self-help environment that allows you to search for the writing topics on which you need more information.

The Dakota State University Online Writing Lab

http://www.departments.dsu.edu/owl/

This online writing lab includes a discussion board, links to other online writing resources, and topic-based links for online research. You can receive writing assistance from the online tutors by posting questions to the discussion board.
