Radicals and Rational Exponents

Chapter 9 - Radicals and Rational Exponents

This chapter provides an overview of radicals, including the Product and Quotient Rules for radicals, and a discussion of rationalizing the denominator and simplifying radicals, including those involving variables. Rational exponents are then introduced, with a look at how they relate to radicals and the rules of exponents. The chapter then moves on to adding, subtracting, and multiplying radicals, and a discussion of conjugates. Then division with radicals is taught, with a deeper look at rationalizing the denominator, and powers of radical expressions. Then the solution of equations involving radicals is covered, with discussions of the Odd-Root and Even-Root Properties, and equations involving rational exponents. The chapter concludes with a discussion of complex numbers, including their use with the four basic arithmetic operations, square roots of negative numbers, and imaginary solutions to equations.
