6 New Interactives (on the OLC and CD-ROM):
Each Interactive will allow students to manipulate parameters and gain a better understanding of topics such as Blackbody Radiation, The Bohr Model, Retrograde Motion, Cosmology, Solar System Builder and the H-R Diagram by watching the effect of these manipulations. This is "real science" at the students finger tips. The key feature of the "Interactives" is that they are scientifically accurate!

The name of the "Re-modeling" boxes will be changed to "The Scientific Method At Work," to emphasize the function of the Scientific Method in astronomy. Some content will be revised.

Updated Coverage:
Revised the Kepler's third law math by adding more explanation and putting the detailed math in a box called "Extending Our Reach: Weighing the Sun."
Added a short section on electromagnetic radiation.
The Doppler Shift.
Expansion of the Extra-Solar Planets.
Cosmological Constant.

An icon placed next to key topics throughout the text to show where there are corresponding animations and interactivities on the accompanying CD-ROM. Along with the placement of the icon, there is a description of each animation.
This is a wonderful feature that takes the step of integrating the technology into the textbook. The icon makes things much less confusing for students -- making it much less frustrating for instructors.

Comprehensive Online Learning Center:
The updated Explorations web site gives instructors the tools they need, and provides study aids and enrichment for students. Instructors will have access to sample syllabi and lecture outlines. The web site will also include animations, hundreds of images, chapter summaries and key terms, web links, scorable practice quizzes, interactive tutorials, a constellation quiz, and much more. Instructors and students have one of the richest websites available in astronomy. This component will also allow for those courses to pull the online learning center into PageOut or another 3rd party delivery option for web-based instruction, should they choose.

"Re-modeling" Sidebar applications
These boxes deal with the dynamic nature of scientific models, explaining how new technologies and information lead to the evolution and refinement of our theories. Science and the process that leads to discovery is important to many instructors. That can however, be a difficult process to explain to non-scientists. This sidebar can help with that explanation.

"Observational Activities":
Many additional activities are included that students can try at home or in class. These are scattered throughout the text. Many instructors do not have time for a lab component or are not lucky enough to be able to offer a separate lab section. Observational Activities allow students and instructors to bring the ever important portion of lab experience into the class.

Analogy Sketches are included in the margins.
One of the tried-and-true methods of teaching/explaining difficult concepts to student: analogies. Brief - simple analogies - when appropriate are simply inserted into the side margin.

Latest scientific information included.
New discoveries and recent advancements in the field as well as new space images have been added to this new edition. Currency is always an issue in astronomy. Arny will offer the latest in scientific information/discoveries as well as offering other web options (Online Learning Center and PowerWeb)that will continue to provide currency past the publication date.

Packaged FREE with the Arny text is the updated Astronomy ESP CD-ROM.
The updated CD-ROM will have 6 fantastic new interactive simulations including exercises and explanations. These applets have been thoroughly reviewed and the reviewers agree that they are the best interactivities available. The ESP also includes guest essays, a constellation quiz, over 90 animations, images, links to astronomy websites, and much more.

Integration of PowerWeb: Astronomy into the Online Learning Center.
PowerWeb will help to further enhance the currency of an astronomy course by allowing instructors to use scientific news information as often as everyday, weekly with synopsis and quizzing or take journal articles from the past year that have made their impact in astronomy - also with quizzing.
