Suppose the more massive star in a binary system is five times as massive as its companion. Use Figure 21.15 to estimate how the distance between the two stars compares with the separation they would have if the more massive star were six times as massive as its companion. (Assume that the combined mass of the two stars is the same in both cases.)

Suppose the two stars in a binary system have masses of 9 and 1 solar mass. The more massive star loses mass to its companion, and the distance between them shrinks until it is only half its original size. Use Figure 21.15 to find the new masses of the two stars.
