Creating Inclusive Classrooms: The Ability/Disability Continuum and the Health Dimension

Chapter Overview

This chapter has drawn attention to both the historical foundations of the field of special education and current practice of inclusion for children with special needs. In addition, it addresses issues related to the health of children and the responsibility of teachers and schools to consider the means by which children with a variety of health concerns can be integrated into the classroom. Of most importance is the critical role the teacher can play in ensuring that all children are fully integrated into the life and activities of today's classroom while they develop the skills necessary to function effectively in the society at large.
