  1. This chapter reprints an excerpt from the keynote address that Charlton Heston delivered in 1997 at the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association (NRA). Access the NRA's informational web site (it's rather misleadingly titled the Violence Policy Center) to get an overview of this group's activities and the principles it stands for. The address is vpc.org/nrainfo/.
  2. On page 236 of the text, a short excerpt is reprinted from Anthony Bourdain's informative and often entertaining book, Kitchen Confidential. Bourdain, a professional chef in New York City for many years, shows the reader what really goes on in restaurant kitchens. What did critics say about his book? Do a search of your local newspaper or of two or three major daily newspapers in the U.S. and get a sampling of critical opinion about this publication. A list of the top newspapers in the country is printed on page 356. Then read the book and get the inside restaurant scoop yourself. You may never order meat well done again.
  3. Dave Barry is a columnist for the Miami Herald. (See page 244 for an example of his brand of satire, reprinted from Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys.) Barry offers insightful, irreverent, and very funny commentary on social and cultural issues, some serious, others not so serious. A complete list of his columns can be found at www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/living/columnists/dave_barry/.
