Ethical Violations - Matching Exercise

Match the research scenarios to the section of Ethical Standard 8 that is violated.

1

Researchers conducted a naturalistic observation to examine gender differences in touching behaviors by video recording same-sex and opposite sex couples in a local mall, at a restaurant and a cocktail lounge. Independent observers, not aware of the purpose or hypothesis, viewed the videotape and then categorized the behaviors exhibited.

2

Participants were recruited to participate in a stress reduction treatment study and were randomly assigned to the experimental or control condition. After several weeks of treatment, it became necessary for the researchers to pay several of the participants more money to keep them from dropping out of the study at this late date.

3

Researchers used a cover story in their research so participants would not know the true nature of the experiment. There was minimal risk to participants involved and all participants were contacted later and thoroughly debriefed when the study was eventually published.

4

Students wanting an opportunity for extra credit in Dr. P’s class must either participate in one of the department’s research projects or write a 25- page term paper. The research projects do not involve any use of deception and are computer tasks that take about one-hour time.

5

M was a student in a research methods course. He missed a lot of class when his father died and subsequently got bronchitis. He only needed three more surveys to complete his study before he could analyze the results and write the research paper that was due the next day. He decided to fill out the three surveys himself by using answers from three randomly picked surveys that were filled out by others.
