A group of cognitive psychologists examined the effect of noise on memory. Men and women college students were randomly assigned to memorize a list of words either in a noisy or quiet classroom. Participants were given 10-minutes to memorize a list of 30 words and then were asked to recall as many words as possible. The researchers recorded the total number of words correctly recalled. On a questionnaire, participants were also asked to indicate their level of anxiety during the task. The results revealed that participants had better recall in the quiet room and also felt less anxious than those in the noisy room.
