This site will give you a list of current earthquakes around the world. Choose an earthquake from the list that seems to have occurred in the ocean by judging the short geographical descriptions. Click on it. Using the map showing the location of the earthquake, what kind of sea floor feature do you think the earthquake was associated with (mid-ocean ridge, transform fault, trench, hotspot) and what type of plate boundary (divergent, convergent, transform, or in the interior of a plate) did it occur on? Is the area where this earthquake occurred very active seismically? Are the earthquakes that occur in this area generally deep, shallow, or do they occur over a range of depths?

http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/pub/louie/class/100/plate-tectonics.html Read through the text of this site as a review of plate tectonics. Select "Next Lecture: Seismic Waves." Read through this material and check the velocities at which the P and S seismic waves travel. Based on the graph given, calculate the velocity of the P and S waves leaving an earthquake in California (pick a site along the San Andreas Fault) and arriving in a location of your choice.
