The human body exists in a state of dynamic equilibrium with microorganisms. In the healthy individual, this balance is maintained as a peaceful coexistence and lack of disease. But on occasion, the balance tips in favor of the microorganism, and an infection or disease results. In this chapter, we explore each component of the host-parasite relationship, beginning with the nature and function of normal flora, moving to the stages of infection and disease, and closing with a study of epidemiology and the patterns of disease in populations. These topics will set the scene for chapters 14 and 15, which deal with the ways the host defends itself against assault by microorganisms.
