Fifteenth-Century Spain was, and had been for centuries, a multicultural society. Jews, Moslems, and Christians all made substantial contributions to the society of the day. But by the end of the century, the Catholic monarchy of Fernando and Isabel had reconquered the territory previously held by Moslems, and it was now seeking to completely Christianize Spain. Thus, all non-Christians (Jews, and later Moslems) were given the disagreeable choice of converting to Christianity or leaving the country.
