You and your neighbor have each taken a child development course. Based on your knowledge of theory and research, you get into an argument about what to do with a crying baby. Your neighbor believes that picking the baby up when it cries will reinforce crying and create a “spoiled” infant. You believe that picking the baby up when it cries will teach it that someone cares and is responsive so that the infant will develop a sense of trust. A third neighbor has a new baby and has asked for advice. Answer the following questions about your beliefs and those of your neighbor, then describe the advice you would give to the parent of the new baby.
