Go to http://www2.pfeiffer.edu/~lridener/DSS/INDEX.HTML#addams.

Under the heading "The Original Work," select "Hull House Maps and Papers." Then, click on "I. MAP NOTES AND COMMENTS" and answer the following questions:

a. What was the purpose of this study conducted by members of Hull House? What role did the Department of Labor play in this study?

b. What are the street boundaries of this research project? Describe the houses, workplaces, and stores located within these boundaries.

c. What kind of immigrants lived within the street boundaries of this project? What colors were the Irish, Bohemians, and Russians coded on the nationality map?

d. Describe the wage map of this project. In terms of population, which was the largest wage class included in this investigation? What color was it coded on the wage map?

Exercise 2

Go to http://ibiblio.org/gutenberg/etext02/andro10.txt. Here you will find the full text of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "Our Androcentric Culture, or the Man-Made World." Scroll down to Chapter IX, "'Society' and 'Fashion.'" After reading the chapter, answer the following questions:

a. Does Gilman think that men or women create conventions and fashions in society? Does she believe that women dress in order to please men or to please themselves?

b. According to Gilman, what is the "chief charm of girlhood"? What is the social institution responsible for "safeguarding motherhood"?

c. What does Gilman believe a true "feminine" society would look like? Describe gender relations in a feminine society. Would you want to live in such a society? Why or why not?
