Diversity and Discrimination

Essay Quiz

1

Imagine that you are the vice-president of human resources in a very large American corporation in the years immediately following Congress's passing of the Civil Rights Act. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has examined the demographic profile of the management positions in your company and has determined that about 96-97 percent of all management positions are held by white males—prima facie evidence of prior discrimination against women, people of color, and ethnic minorities. The EEOC issues an order compelling your company to address and correct this egregious imbalance. How would you proceed? Over what period?
2

Suppose that four equally qualified people are candidates for a particular management position in a company where diversity of gender or color or ethnic origin is not an issue. Is any of these four entitled to the job? Would it be ethically right to select one candidate on a basis other than qualifications (since all are equally qualified) such as having graduated form the recruiter's university, or on general appearance, or on attractiveness, or on the intuition that one of them will likely be easier to work with personality-wise? Or would the fair way be to pick the name of the successful candidate randomly-"out of a hat" so to speak?
3

Do you think that women can be effective managers of other people or do you believe, as some do, that alleged "feminine characteristics" like sensitivity to others, compassion, or propensity to favor teamwork over competition would interfere with their making tough personnel decision involving discipline, demotions, or dismissals of employees?
