Consider This 9.1

What does the process of leadership emergence tell you about how to not become a leader? The following rules, if followed, will probably result in low status and, if followed well, will remove you from leadership contention altogether.25 Miss as many group meetings as possible. Say very little. Jump to be the group’s secretary. Do what you are told. When you do contribute, be dogmatic, verbally aggressive, and act like you know it all—do so early in the group’s history. When you can, play the role of the joker. Finally, show a disdain for leadership. What other things can you do to make sure you are not a group’s leader?

Consider This 9.2

Despite our unsuccessful efforts to identify those traits that distinguish leaders from nonleaders, we still have fun playing with the physical characteristics associated with leaders, especially when we try to predict presidential elections. Consider the 2000 election, for instance. Did you know that male leaders brush their hair from the left (Al Gore brushed from the right)? Only 5 of 41 presidents have been left-handed (all front runners in the 2000 race were right-handed). The taller presidential candidate enjoys a 3–1 advantage over other contenders (Bill Bradley was 6 feet 5 inches tall). And finally, some say "royal" blood is the best predictor in a presidential election; George W. Bush is the most "royal" of any president.27 What traits do you associate with leaders?
