After studying this chapter, you should:

  • Appreciate how a lack of scientific training led Binet to make unfortunate mistakes
  • Know of the origins of the Binet-Simon scale and what its original purpose was
  • Know of the numerous (negative) contributions of Goddard
  • Appreciate the circumstances surrounding Goddard that may make it inappropriate to single him out as the source of all the harm that was done
  • Be able to describe the positive contributions of both Goddard and Terman
  • Understand the role psychologists had it WWI, and the role WWI played in changing psychology
