1
What functional advantage (s) might there be to a red blood cell lacking mitochondria?
2
Red blood cells contain hemoglobin so the lack of mitochondria may give the cell more room for hemoglobin. Since they lack mitochondria, they can not use up the oxygen they are carrying for their own (probably minimal) energy needs (see chapter 3). Red blood cells do not creep around like the white blood cells do so they don't need much energy.
3
The malarial parasite, for much of its life, lives in and feeds on red blood cells. What hormone do malaria sufferers produce more than other people do?
4
Why would a cardiologist be interested in using the chemicals a mosquito or leech secretes during feeding?
5
A streptococcal infection can lead to scarring of the mitral valve (i.e. stenosis due to a rheumatic heart). How would you diagnose this condition?
6
During the colorful ceremonies where Buckingham Palace guards stand at attention for long periods of time, the soldiers are much more likely to faint than the spectators and royalty. The crowd and Queen have probably been standing at the event as long as the troops but rarely exhibit distress. Why should there be this difference?
