About the Authors



Lynne Schafer Gross

She has taught television production full-time at a number of U.S. colleges, including California State University–Fullerton, Pepperdine University, UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, and Long Beach City College. She has also taught production internationally in Estonia, Australia, Guyana, Swaziland, and Malaysia. Her professional experience includes serving as director of programming for Valley Cable TV and producing series for commercial, public, and cable television. She is past president of the Broadcast Education Association and has served as governor for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Her honors include receiving the BEA’s Distinguished Education Service Award and the IRTS Frank Stanton Fellow Award. She has published 10 other books and numerous journal articles. Her doctorate is from UCLA.

James C. Foust

He is an associate professor and head of the Broadcast Journalism sequence in the Department of Journalism at Bowling Green State University. He has worked in commercial video production and as a television news videographer and editor. He currently works on freelance video and interactive media production, and has published several journal articles and book chapters. He also has written a book, Big Voices of the Air: The Battle Over Clear Channel Radio, and he is working on an online journalism textbook. He holds a Ph.D. and and M.S. degree from Ohio University.

Thomas D. Burrows

He now holds the title of Professor Emeritus in the Radio, TV, and Film Department at California State University–Northridge. Retirement from full-time teaching has provided him the opportunity to pursue a number of activities relating both to his academic background and to his work as a professional broadcaster. He continues to work with the Radio, Television, and Film Department at California State University–Northridge and with several community broadcasting projects. During his earlier career as a producer and director in commercial and public broadcasting, he received the Christopher, Emmy, and Peabody awards. He holds an M.A. degree from the School of Journalism at the University of Southern California.
