Chapter 1 Overview

Video production is an exciting field. Whether you are putting together a video of your college graduation ceremony or directing a hit show for network TV, you will find that the art of combining elements into a meaningful whole is a creative process that is both stimulating and rewarding. To undertake production, you must interact with both people and equipment. This book gives you the skills to do both. That is why the book is subtitled "Disciplines and Techniques." Disciplines will make you a valued member of a crew, and techniques will enable you to do your job, especially as it relates to equipment operation.

The first chapter of this book is devoted to an overview of the production process and some of the factors that account for the current state of video production. The chapter starts with a definition of the disciplines and techniques that underlie a successful career in video production.

It then goes on to discuss the following:
  • What is meant by a professional attitude (1.1)
  • How attitude and self-image can affect your work (1.1)
  • The differences and similarities related to studio, field, and remote productions (1.2)
  • The physical characteristics and equipment found in studios and control rooms (1.2)
  • Some of the real-world considerations of field production (1.2)
  • How trucks and cameras operate in remote productions (1.2)
