Revision Changes

  • The title has been changed to better reflect the book's content. This is a world prehistory text, but one that integrates methods on a topical basis.
  • In order to increase the amount of archaeological theory in the text, a new set of boxes, entitled "On the Cutting Edge," have been added to address contemporary issues in archaeological theory.
  • To achieve a balance between the coverage of Paleolithic hunters and gatherers and complex agricultural societies, a chapter on the rise of complex societies in China has been added (Chapter 22) and some of the short hunter-gatherer chapters from the first edition (Chapters 13 and 14 in Archaeology and Prehistory) have also been eliminated.
  • To guarantee adequate coverage of archaeological methods, the authors have added "Archaeology in Practice" to every chapter. The new methodological topics covered include remote sensing and site survey, analysis of metal artifacts, phytolith analysis, and post-glacial sea-level changes.
  • The entire text has been updated to reflect new discoveries. In particular, the chapters on early human evolution and behavior (Chapters 2 and 3), the emergence of modern humans (Chapters 6 and 7), the beginnings of farming in the Americas (Chapter 17), and the archaeology of the Aztecs (part of Chapter 24) have been substantially revised and updated.
  • New comprehensive timelines on the inside covers and at the beginning of each Part provide a graphical, "big-picture" view of all periods, geographical areas, and major events discussed in the book.
