Exercise 6.3 (23.0K)

Use the following information to write a Saturday morning story on the missing child in your town.
It turns out that the baby sitter and her boyfriend kidnapped 4-year-old Angela Norton.
The boyfriend is 17-year-old Jonathan Matthew Presley, who lives with his parents at 1970 W. Franklin St. Presley is a junior at the same high school that Nancy Bonner attends.
Sgt. Timothy McClung said the baby sitter admitted to police during questioning that she and her boyfriend kidnapped the child Tuesday night in an effort to collect ransom from the Nortons. He said that Bonner faked being asleep when the Nortons returned home and found their daughter missing.
"The baby sitter did not figure on the Nortons calling the police right away," McClung said. "She thought they would just be frantic until her boyfriend called them anonymously at 11 p.m. to tell them that the child would be safe if they had the baby sitter deliver $25,000 to him. Problem is,
these kids didn't do much thinking at all. The parents got home earlier than expected and called police right away. Officers were already at the house when the kidnapper called. We did not tell reporters what we knew the night of the kidnapping because we did not want to jeopardize the return of the child."
McClung said the child was not returned to her home until three days after the kidnapping because police officers could not find Presley, who took the girl to a local motel and hoped that he could collect a ransom even after the plot failed.
"When he was arrested, he told police he turned himself in with the child because he was tired of her crying," McClung said.
The child was returned safely to her parents this morning after spending three nights in the motel. She was not harmed, although she was hungry and dirty.
Presley and Bonner have been referred to juvenile authorities, who say that kidnapping charges will be filed against the two.
