This example shares the voices of student researchers. This high school group conducted a sophisticated research project to find out if female butterflies prefer one milkweed species to another when laying eggs. Evaluate their study and answer the following questions.

  • State the group's hypothesis.
  • Summarize the research methods used by researchers.
  • What types of techniques did the group use to visually display their data?
  • Discuss the results of their experiment.
  • Identify possible sources of threat to internal validity.
  • Imagine the roles of teachers in this project. Describe teacher characteristics and types of expertise you think would be necessary for this project to be a success. Why do you think so?
