  • Coverage of No Child Left Behind Legislation: NCLB will be introduced in Chapter 2 and then discussed in other chapters (such as 3, 8 and 9) as appropriate.
  • Assessment Chapter: Revised to be more practical, the new adds more examples of assessment of reading, writing, and content areas (more diagrams, charts, tables, rubrics), expands the discussion of authentic assessment, adds a new section on coping with standardized tests and teaching strategies for helping ELLs take standardized tests, and updates resources.
  • Heavily revised Special Education Chapter. The revision includes coverage of NCLB vis-à-vis language minority students with special teaching and learning needs; greater attention to characteristics which define English language learners who need special education; and more practical examples and classroom activities for working with language minority students with special needs .
  • Integrates references to technology, passim throughout the text, and adds links to appropriate URLs in chapter.
  • Moved the section on program models to chapter 3 from chapter 2 to even out the length of the chapters.
  • Reorganized Chapter 4 by transferring older ESL material and some historical information to the Online Learning Center.
