Many modern TV shows and films refer to Gilbert and Sullivan operettas (Angel, The Simpsons, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Family Guy, Star Trek: Insurrection, Raiders of the Lost Ark). Locate a few of these references and discover how and why they are used. Can you make a general statement about their use in other media?

If you have seen a Broadway show live, compare what you have seen to a film version of the show. How has the stage show been adapted for use in film (or vice versa)? What dramatic elements work best in each medium?

Compare the musical theatre scores written by classically trained musicians (Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, for example) to more modern examples using pop songwriters (Elton John's Aida). What are the musical differences? Does music seem to play the same role in each style?
