After listening to some traditional Native American music, watch a favorite "Western" movie or one that portrays Native Americans in some way. How does the portrayal of the music (and the culture) in the film compare with what you have heard and read in your text?

Listen to some music by any of the Native American artists listed as "Key Figures" on page 32 of your text. Make a list of the musical elements that seem to derive from their Native American Heritage and those that do not. What other influences do you hear?

Compare the Native American examples on your CD with some examples of traditional African music. Make a list of similarities and differences, noting especially elements of unison singing, call and response, and falsetto singing.
