experimental music  Music challenging accepted concepts of musical sound.
bitonality  Two keys at the same time.
polytonality  More than two keys at the same time.
polyrhythms  Two or more simultaneous rhythmic patterns.
microtone  Any interval smaller than a half step.
tone cluster  A chord, usually of several tones, built upon seconds. Clusters are often played with the flat of the hand, the arm, or a board cut to a specified length.
New Music  A term used for music of an experimental nature.
musique concrËte (concrete music)  Music created by manipulating taped sounds.
twelve-tone  A technique of organizing music, developed by Arnold Schoenberg, in which all twelve tones of the octave are of equal significance.
gamelan  An Indonesian percussion ensemble.
prepared piano  A grand piano on which some or all of the strings have been “prepared” by placing foreign materials on them, thereby altering pitch, timbre, and dynamic level.
