Learn a ballad from memory using a recording such as The Library of Congress Archive of Folk Culture's Anglo-American Ballads or the Anthology of American Folk Music issued by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

Listen to at least three recorded versions of the same ballad and compare the texts. What differences are there, and do those variations change the meaning of the ballad? An excellent list of recordings for comparison can be found at http://thechildballads.com/.

Many of the song types discussed in chapter two (work songs, ring shouts, field hollers, and so on) are examples of functional music; that is, the songs are meant to accompany a particular activity. Make a list of functional music in today's society: how does it differ from the music described in your text?
