Your text discusses several famous virtuoso musicians of the nineteenth century. Based on the discussion of a virtuoso on page 119, make a short list of performers that you think would be considered virtuosi today. How do these various performers compare to the description in your text? How does the audience reaction compare?

Listen to several other piano pieces by Louis Moreau Gottschalk and compare them to a few recordings of piano ragtime (by Scott Joplin, for instance). Do you hear any similarities? Are those similarities melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, or a combination of the above?

Read some biographical material about the pianist and composer Franz Liszt. Make a list of parallels between his life, career, stage persona, and music and that of Gottschalk.
