chamber orchestra  A small orchestra, with only a few instruments per line of music.
Second New England School  The first American composers to write significant works in all the large concert forms. Sometimes referred to as the Boston classicists.
transcription  An arrangement of a piece originally composed for a particular instrument or ensemble so that it can be played by a different instrument or combination of instruments.
fugue  A polyphonic composition in which imitative entrances of two or more voices alternate between tonic and dominant. Originally conceived for keyboard instruments, fugues now are written for other instruments and for voices as well.
sequence  The repetition of a melodic figure at different levels of pitch.
exposition  The first section of a fugue.
coda  Closing section.
suite  An instrumental work consisting of several dances or other semi-independent pieces.
MacDowell Colony  A colony for artists in every medium established on the estate of Edward MacDowell by his widow, in Peterboro, New Hampshire.
Wa-Wan Press  A publishing company established in 1901 by Arthur Farwell, dedicated to American music.
