Activity 1: Using Subjects and Verbs

Directions: This activity will help familiarize you with subjects and verbs used by professional writers. Visit any or all of the following sites and find an essay that interests you.

The New York Times Magazine

The Atlantic Monthly

Harper's

Salon Magazine

New Scientist

The Smithsonian

Then find the subjects and verbs in the author's sentences. Can you characterize the subjects? What kind of work do the verbs do? Can you make any connections between these things and the reason you liked the essay in the first place?
