Activity: Capital Punishment

1

Look carefully at two of the following sites and analyze the ways in which they present the issue of capital punishment:

Death Penalty Information Center  Non-profit site offering staggering amount of information on the death penalty.

Pro-death penalty.com  As advertised: discussion and related links in support of the death penalty

Justice for All  "A Criminal Justice Reform Organization." Broader concerns (victims' rights) include maintaining status quo on capital punishment in the U.S.

Consider the following in doing your analysis:

  • Who authored the site? What is the author's interest in the capital punishment issue?
  • Where is the site hosted? What connection is there between the host organization and the issue at hand?
  • Does the site purport to be neutral on the issue? If so, does it succeed? If not, what position does it appear to take?
  • What kind of information is presented? What, if anything, is left out?
  • What was the most powerful element of the site's presentation of the issue? What was the weakest?
  • Did anything you see/read change your position on the issue?
