Recognizing Patterns of Development of the Main Idea: This page, a project of the Chicago Reading Initiative Literacy Team, offers brief introduction to the patterns of development, along with 5 passages for practice.

1

  • EXERCISE: Use the passages to practice what you have learned in Chapter 7 of your text. (You’ll probably want to print out the HTML page using the “File” menu.) Be sure to identify not only the pattern of development used in each passage, but the topic sentence and the signal words. How did you do?

  • The Career Key: A short test designed to help you choose your ideal career.

    2

  • EXERCISE: 1. Take the test, and reflect on your results. Did you encounter anything surprising, or did you mostly learn what you expected? 2. Consider how the kind of advice you received here differs from the kind of advice given by Selection 7-1 in your text. How is the information organized? Can you make any connections to the form of the test and the Selection, and the discussion of the patterns of development in your text?
