This chapter describes the supervisor’s role in recruiting, selecting, and training employees. It also presents specific information on orienting and training employees.

1. Define recruiting, selection, orientation, and training. Recruiting involves seeking and attracting qualified candidates for job vacancies. The purpose of selection is to choose the best person for the job from those candidates. Orientation is the process of introducing new employees to the organization, their work unit, and their jobs. Training involves the acquisition by employees of the skills, information, and attitudes necessary for improving their effectiveness.

2. Define job analysis, job description, and job specification. Job analysis involves determining the pertinent information relating to the performance of a specific job. A job description is a written portrayal of a job and the types of work required by the job. A job specification gives the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

3. Describe the steps in the selection process. Basically, there are seven steps in the selection process. These steps are not necessarily followed in full for each and every job. The seven steps are screening from the employment application, interview by human resources department, employment tests, background and reference checks, job interview by the supervisor, selection decision by the supervisor, and a medical examination.

4. Define tests, test validity, and test reliability. Tests provide a sample of behavior used to draw inferences about the future behavior or performance of an individual. Test validity refers to the extent to which a test predicts a specific criterion. Test reliability refers to the consistency or reproducibility of the results of a test.

5. Discuss the supervisor’s role in the orientation process. Orientation is concerned with introducing the new employee to the organization and the job. In large organizations, the supervisor and the human resources department usually share the orientation responsibilities. If the organization has no human resources department, or has only a small one, the supervisor is generally responsible for conducting the orientation.

6. Outline the steps in training employees in job skills. The five steps in training employees in physical skills are get the trainees ready to learn, break down the work into components and identify the key points, demonstrate the proper way the work is to be done, let the trainees perform the work, and put the trainees on their own gradually.
