The rue Mouffetard, which winds its way down from the place de la Contrescarpe, dates back to the 13th century, and was the main Roman road leading from Paris to Italy. Until the 17th century, much of Paris looked like this: streets were very narrow and houses close together. Louis XIV was responsible for the first grands boulevards.

It was not until the 19th century, however, that Haussmann, an administrator in the government of Napoléon III, created the network of boulevards for which Paris is famous. His plans were dictated in part by fears of the popular street revolts of the 19th century. By creating straight lines and open spaces, he eliminated the ease with which the streets were blocked by barricades and created clean sightlines for the government troops to shoot down!
