After reading and studying this chapter and participating in lecture and discussion, students should be able to:

Distinguish among somatoform disorders, psychosomatic disorders, malingering, and factitious disorders.

Define conversion disorder and la belle indifference, and discuss how early physicians and psychodynamic theorists viewed it.

Discuss the types of traumas frequently experienced by people with conversion disorder, and the other disorders that often accompany it.

Describe the psychodynamic and behavioral treatments for conversion disorder.

Distinguish among somatization disorder, pain disorder, conversion disorder, and hypochondriasis.

Discuss the cultural and cohort variations in the rates of somatization disorder, as well as the disorders that often accompany it and those that are similar to it, making it difficult to diagnose.

Discuss the possible causes of somatization disorder.

Summarize how clinicians conduct psychotherapy for people with somatization disorder.

Describe the theories of DID and the different approaches to treating it.

Define dissociative fugue, and explain how it is similar to and different from other dissociative disorders.

Discuss the conditions that may precede a dissociative fugue.

Distinguish among anterograde, retrograde, organic, and psychogenic amnesia, and know the types of information that tend to be lost and retained in each type.

Define depersonalization disorder.

Discuss the controversy surrounding the issue of repressed memories.
